Q’eqchi are Mayan people who run the Cahabón Estate. It is located in the basin of the Cahabón River, a special agroforestry area that serves two purposes: water retention and CO2 capture through the trees. Apart from cocoa, cardamom, black pepper, allspice and turmeric are also grown there.
The cocoa beans are fermented on site.

The cooperative FEDECOVERA (Federación de Cooperativas de las Verapaces R. L.) in the Alta Verapaz, unites a good 260 farmer families of Q’eqchi and Poqom’chi, who speak their own language. The cooperative is committed to preserving the old varieties of cocoa that existed in the Mayan heyday. But new Trinitario cultivars are also cultivated.

Rob de Jong and Clara Bartelds: “We visited this area in December 2017. The population there is, by our Western standards, not rich, but prefers the Maya culture and to continue living where they have lived for generations.”
