Kaithapara Vanam cocoa is grown by a forest-dwelling community in Idukki, a region in the state of Kerala characterised by its vast mountain forests and mild climate. And so the British planted cocoa here in the 18th century, bringing it with them from Ambon, one of Indonesia’s spice islands.

The local smallholders grow cocoa alongside a wide variety of spices and fruits. The tradition of growing unique cocoa, together with an abundance of spices, makes Kaithapara an interesting terroir. Stable prices throughout the seasons mean that this organic cocoa is an economically attractive and environmentally friendly source of income for local families.  The preservation of the trees also promotes biodiversity and a flourishing ecosystem.

In the 1980s, several local cocoa varieties were planted in the Velloor forest of Kaithapara. The morphological characteristics of this cocoa show that they are mainly locally created hybrids with a strong presence of forastero and sometimes white beans.
