Description
SAASE is called it in Spanish: sin azúcares añadidos sin edulcorantes, or: no added sugars no sweeteners. There is agave fibre in the chocolate.
Something may be called sugar-free if it has less than 0.5 gr of sugar per 100 gr. But chocolate – and many other products – have natural sugars anyway. And what is agave fibre? Blanxart solves this by printing 0% twice on the packaging.
The Trinitario variety cocoa beans for this bar originate from Waslala, situated within the Unesco Biosphere Bosawás in Nicaragua. It is characterized by deep earthy tones with hints of nuts and grasses. The bar melts easily, releasing its flavours quickly.
The Unesco Bosawás biosphere is the largest tropical rainforest of the America’s after the Amazon forest. It encompasses multiple national parks and reserves, totalling 15% of the area of Nicaragua. The name is an acronym composed of the Bocay River (BO), the Cerro Saslaya National Park (SA), and the Waspuk River (WAS). Two indigenous peoples live in Bosawás: the Miskito and the Mayagna.
The municipality of Waslala is situated within Bosawás and encompasses the town and a large area around it. Blanxart have not disclosed who the supplier of the beans is, but we have a strong suspicion that it is CACAONICA, a cooperative from Waslala that started in 2000 and now has approximately 280 members in 40 villages. On October 16, 2017, Danish chocolate maker Mikkel Fris Holm won gold medals for his Nicaraguan chocolate at the International Chocolate Awards in London. This was proudly reported in the Nicaraguan press/radio, including the information that Blanxart purchases the same cocoa.
Flavour notes: intense floral notes, accompanied by citrus and fruity touches (orange, lemon, pineapple) and further balanced by nutty and grassy notes.
